Vale Do Lobo Royal Course and Ocean Courses
Abiding by the original design concepts produced by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton for Vale do Lobo in 1968, the respected American golf architect, Rocky Roquemore, undertook a total re-vamping of both layouts in 1997. The melding of the two architectural styles has been seamless and today both courses flow as naturally as any could wish. The European tour has since selected a combination of holes from each of the two layouts as one course that has been used to host The Portuguese Open on two occasions. Both The Royal and The Ocean take players through umbrella pine and fig tree-lined fairways to the Atlantic – the Royal playing dramatically along the cliff’s edge, while the Ocean sweeps graciously down to the beach.
Vale do Lobo Royal Course’s short but spectacular 16th hole is unique and unlike anything else you will encounter on the Algarve – teeing off from the cliff-top, the tee shot must carry across not one but two adjacent, gaping gorges with the beach 200 feet below, it’s one for the memory book.
Both layouts are good-lookers, each offering a very enjoyable round to be thoroughly enjoyed by all skill levels.
