Royal Ashdown Forest offers not one, but two Royal courses, designed by nature and famous for having no bunkers. The shorter West Course became only the second Royal ladies’ course in Great Britain when it received the title in 1932. Now both offer a stern test to men and women alike with the flatter West favoured by many as the perfect ‘after lunch’ experience. The Old Course’s reputation as a true test of golf is undiminished after 126 years thanks to uncontrived hazards of heather, narrow fairways, hollows and streams. Long carries from the tees is required. With stunning views over the forest, the Old Course is particularly demanding despite its relatively short distance that is not suited to high handicappers.
