Another Spanish architect of note, Ramon Espionosa receives full credit for his gem of an accomplishment at Mediterraneo, located about 30 miles along the coast, northeast of Valencia. This has been Sergio Garcia’s home club for years and the place he learned golf under the tutorage of his father, the club pro. The European Tour added Mediterraneo to its regular tournament schedule in 2008 as host to the Castello Masters, which Sergio won in the inaugural year and again in 2011. The subtly positioned hazards can confuse the less experienced and the cleverly located fairway and greenside bunkers might further complicate matters, but the thinking player can use everything to their advantage – a positive approach works wonders at Mediterraneo.
